Community Outreach & Education
LC4 provides outreach and preventive cancer-related health education to improve cancer screening rates and early diagnosis through a variety of strategies including:
- Training and supporting community members as promotores to reach out to their family, friends and neighbors
- Providing brief education in Spanish in local community settings such as English language classes, churches, parenting education programs and health care clinics
- Participating in and conducting health fairs and special screening events held in local communities on Mother’s Day or after Sunday mass
- Implementing comprehensive social marketing campaigns on the radio, on TV and in print Spanish media, in buses and in the community targeted toward increasing screening and accessing care
- Outreaching to community agencies serving Latinos
- Conducting cancer health education classes in community settings
These programs are designed to (1) mobilize the community to take a leadership role in reducing cancer-related inequities, (2) improve knowledge about cancer, the importance of screening and the availability of cancer-related services and, (3) change community perceptions about cancer and motivate individuals to seek regular screening.
